ACTH (Corticotropin): Veterinary Drug
Summary |
Corticotropin (ACTH) is a substance normally secreted by
the pituitary gland in both humans and animals. ACTH is
needed for the normal production of corticosteroid hormones.
Corticosteroid hormones help the body adapt to stressful
situations and are involved in glucose (blood sugar) regulation.
ACTH preparations are indicated for use in dogs, cats, and
cattle for treatment of ACTH defficiency, as well as the
treatment of bovine ketosis. ACTH is also commonly used
for the diagnosis of hyper- or hypo-adrenocorticism (high
or low levels of corticosteroid hormones) by means of an
ACTH stimulation test.
