Cyclosporine is an immune suppressing agent used in several
immune-mediated diseases such as feline asthma, and hemolytic
anemia. Cyclosporine is also used in kidney transplant in
cats. More recently, there has been an increase in use of
this drug for the treatment of itching from atopic dermatitis.
Cyclosporine may be favorable over corticosteroids such
as dexamethasone, prednisone, or triamcinolone for the treatment
of atopic dermatitis because it lacks the hormonal side
effects that are associated with long-term steroid use.
