Itraconazole is a synthetic antifungal (triazole) agent
that is used for treatment of systemic mycoses (fungal infections).
Itraconazole may be used for several different types of
systemic fungal infections in animals, including those caused
by certain strains of Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus,
and other fungi. In horses, itraconazole is used for treatment
of sporotrichosis and Coccidioides immitis osteomyelitis.
Itraconazole may also be used for skin infections in animals,
such as superficial candidiasis or dermatophytosis (ringworm).
Itraconazole is believed to have fewer side effects in small
animals than ketoconazole.
