Metronidazole is an antibiotic (nitroimidazole class) agent
that is useful in treating anaerobic bacterial infections
(both systemic and enteric) as well as infections caused
by parasites such as Trichomonas and Balantidium. Metronidazole
is commonly used in veterinary medicine for the treatment
of giardia in dogs and cats, as well as in horses for anaerobic
infections. Metronidazole suspension has also been used
in birds and reptiles.
